On Saturday Oct 25, 2014, Bishop Frank J. Caggiano presented 130 St. Augustine Medal recipients with medal for their “generous and loving service to the Church.” Three medals were presented to Catholic Charities volunteers during the 2014 St. Augustine Medal of Service ceremony.
Mr. Don Hickey – Don has been an active member of The Merton House family for than 15 years. As a member of the advisory board, Dona has been a champion of the Merton Celebrity Breakfast acting as a point person and a chief salesman for our annual program booklet. He then puts together 3 or more tables at the event. Don is one of our unsung heroes and he is in the forefront of anything that needs to be done for the program.
Mr. William Tommins – Bill has been a member of the Catholic Charities Board for several years and a big supporter of Catholic Charities programs for many years. In particular, Bill co-chaired the 2014 Catholic Charities / AETNA Golf Classic & Lobster Feast and brought in more than $100,000, record amount for the event.
Mr. Paul Harinstein – Paul has served on the New Covenant House board for a number of years and has served as its President for the last 3. He has spearheaded a $1.5 million capital campaign to move and expand the facility, which is the largest soup kitchen in the State. Over the last few months, Paul and his team have raised in excess of $1,000,000 making the move very viable.
Danbury Celebrity Breakfast Delivers Positive Message About Faith & Community

The Danbury Advisory Board hosted its annual Celebrity Breakfast on October 30, 2014 at the Amber Room Colonade in Danbury. This year’s Greek themed event was inspired by the celebrity guest speaker, Ernie Anastos who delivered a positive message about faith and community. New Covenant House Receives Major Grant of $500,000 from the Hebert and Nell Singer Foundation

Paul Harinstein, Chair of the New Covenant House Advisory Board and Laure Aubuchon, New Covenant House Capital Campaign Chair announced today the receipt of a grant of $500,000 from the Herbert and Nell Singer Foundation, Stamford, CT. for its current Capital Campaign. “This transformative grant from the Singer Foundation, reflecting its commitment to Stamford, will assure we meet our construction schedule and permit the new facility to be up and running in the first quarter of 2015” said Mr. Harinstein. Including the Singer Foundation grant, New Covenant House is at 70% of its goal of $1.5 million needed to renovate and move into a larger and more efficient facility across the street from its current location.
The New Covenant House is the largest soup kitchen in Lower Fairfield County. Singer Foundation Board Chair Jay Sandak commenting on the Foundation’s gift said, “Stamford has always been about community, its citizens and organizations helping each other. The Foundation supports the mission of New Covenant House and we are very pleased to have been able to contribute to the realization of this new facility.”
The “new” New Covenant House will encompass 8,000 sq. ft. at 174 Richmond Hill, a major expansion from its current 2,000 sq. ft. location. New Covenant House serves hot meals twice a day, 365 days a year. Including the breakfast program and food pantry, it provides over 700,000 meals a year. The need for this humanitarian service has doubled in the past 6 years. The new facility will include an efficient and modern kitchen, a welcoming dining area, expanded food storage area and refrigeration, a spacious food pantry area and additional space for other services
Founded over 36 years ago, New Covenant House is an inter-faith project of Catholic Charities of Fairfield County, serving the homeless, elderly, disabled, working poor, and children. No one is turned away. There are no requirements to enter the NCH doors, except a mutual exchange of respect and dignity.

NEW Food Pantry Opens at Thomas Merton Center

On October 19th, the Eat Smart MarketPlace was launched at the Thomas Merton Center in place of St. Stephen’s Food Pantry. This new and improved food pantry provides groceries to encompass 5 days of nutritious meals per month for families and individuals living in the 06604, 06605, and 06606 zip codes in Bridgeport. Eat Smart Marketplace will serve over 500 families per month! The mission of the pantry is to provide healthy food to its guests. Currently over 75% of the food distributed is quality food rescued from local grocery stores. This consists mostly of fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy prepared foods that would have been thrown out due to a short shelf life, but are perfectly safe to eat. The Eat Smart MarketPlace formed a partnership with a group called Community Plates. Community Plates provides a “Food Rescue” service in conjunction with Trader Joe’s and as such they are able to provide the pantry with fresh produce deliveries approximately 3 to 4 times per week. Community Plates drivers go out to Trader Joe’s and collect the bins of what would be discarded fruits, veggies, meats, seafood, sandwiches, etc. and deliver them to the pantry. This has dramatically decreased the need to give out canned goods high in sugars and salt that are typically provided by so many of the other Food Pantries in the area. The Eat Smart MarketPlace is now concentrating on providing its guests with a wide variety of fresh foods. The pantry also offers suggestions on how to cook many of the items provided and has volunteers who give cooking demonstrations. The Eat Smart MarketPlace also prides itself on being very “user” friendly and as close to a supermarket experience as a Food Pantry can get right down to having real shopping carts and bags. The facility has transitioned from a one room pantry where intakes, prep, storage and shopping all occurred in one space to a multi-room shopping experience in a larger, brighter section of the Thomas Merton Center. The new Eat Smart MarketPlace has a waiting room, a private intake room, separate prep rooms for the food, 3 storage rooms and a large generously proportioned shopping room. If anyone ever says size doesn’t matter, they are very much mistaken. In this case, size has made a world of difference. Please feel free to come and join us for a tour of our Eat Smart MarketPlace.
